    Jason Hawkes Photography

Post by David on February 25th, 2010

Some stunning photography of London… at night… from above (Jason Hawkes has a whole bunch of stunning aerial photography from around the world… s’true). We lived in London for a good fifteen years and had a great time, brilliant place and now don’t live too far away as I don’t think it’ll be out of our system completely.

    Frank Chimero

Post by David on February 25th, 2010

Found Frank Chimero, a graphic designer/illustrator through his ongoing ‘States’ project a while back (he likens California to a stubbed out cigarette and is making his way around the rest of his country). But lately his ‘other’ project has been relaunched: Thinking for a living. Check it out and lose some time, quality time though, not wasted.

    Was Swiss design ever bad?

Post by David on February 25th, 2010

Having just done Typecast myself and came out as ‘Helvetica’… I came across this again, ‘the only book on Swiss graphic design for the chemical industry’ – it took some finding but Grain Edit had it so I’m linking to them. The word is beautiful.

    Flight thru Instruments

Post by David on February 21st, 2010

Some fabulous illustrations from 1945 in a book called ‘Flight thru instruments’ from the General Motors ‘graphic engineering’ staff under Harley Earl (who went on to inspire the Cadillac tailfin ‘craze’). Nice discovery from Telstar Logistics… and accompanying Flickr book. Via Ministry of Type.

    Woody Allen’s typography

Post by David on February 21st, 2010

Came across the answer to a question that’s always been at the back of my mind and I just never bothered to investigate further. Woody Allen’s movies invariably have the same typographic style in the title sequence, white type on black background… whether he’s trying to establish a house style no-one really knows but turns out it’s Windsor Elongated (available here). Other resource to check out is Contact Sheet.

    Freixenet: The Key to Reserva

Post by David on February 19th, 2010

Really, some people have all the fun! Still trying to figure out if there’s any truth at all in this.
